want list #1

my birthday is in 47 days.. you may gift these to me.

oh, thank you.

Season CINCO is here

...and i heard these 15 minutes comedic gems are being promoted to half hour shows (EDIT: but i was misinformed, they are still only 15 minutes mrehh). most excellent. bring on the tasteless cinco promotions, the exploitation of public service announcements, and hands down the best manipulation of computer generated effects ever to grace my television.

SMALL BLACK

"Production-wise, "Despicable Dogs" is a little masked and faint (how bedroom), but it tugs at you so sweetly and sorrowfully that it begins to feel overwhelmingly huge. "Just Like Honey" huge. Small Black is the Long Island duo of Josh Kolenik and Ryan Heyner, and they make the kind of hazy lo-fi we've been hearing a lot this summer (live, they add Pitchfork.tv contributors Juan Pieczanski and Jeff Curtin to the mix). But as much as the season is about goofy sunglasses and cold beer, it's also about those garden-crippling late-month frosts. And these guys have that sense of yearning on lock. The pieces that comprise "Despicable Dogs" seem so Frisbee-friendly that you'd expect any emotional relevance to be rendered moot, from the tacky drum machine to the heavy processing on that tubular guitar noise, to the glossy melancholic key plunks. But it both warms and bruises at the same time. "Do it without me, do it when I'm gone," goes the hook. Such gimmick-free sentimentality can often prove too difficult to finagle, but "Despicable Dogs" is a guaranteed soul-stirrer." - Pitchfork

old (contra) news

I know the hype for Vampire Weekend is hardly new news but there is something so annoyingly charming about their look and sound…like they'd pick you up for a date in a 1956 Jaguar XK140, take you to a clam bake and treat you with their trust-fund credit card. Straight Indie-pop bliss, it’s love. Dont forget your polo and ray bans if you plan on fitting in at their shows

"But more than anything else, with Contra, Vampire Weekend once again perpetuates the main reason why most people hate them, the biggest reason of all for the never-ending backlash: they are so damn good." -PMA

Mmm and their tune 'Horchata' makes me pine for lunch in Mexico

Spankin' new Camille Rose Garcia !

LA based artist Camille Rose Garcia (the artist who created the work that now graces my right forearm.. permanently) has re-illustrated the beloved story, Alice in Wonderland. I wish real life was this creepy.

HOWEVER! This news isn't even the best part...Camille Rose Garcia will be visiting Seattle for a signing of her new book on March 13th at Roq La Rue gallery. Ahh, would it be tacky to have her sign my arm as well?

FOR THE LOVE OF NIXON

mad rad via the Nixon flickr feed

Furreal??

"Armani Exchange wants to share the love this Valentine's Day, but some concerned parents think AX is doing a little over-sharing. An advertisement plastered in store windows and on AX's website featuring three couples embracing (one guy-guy, one guy-girl and one girl-girl) has been called soft porn by OneMillionMoms.com, a project of the American Family Association:

Malls, where teens hang out, have retailers whose window displays poison our children with 10-foot posters that are nothing but soft p*rn. In particular, Armani Exchange has recently displayed Valentine's posters with partially dressed "couples" holding one another. These couples consist of two men, a man and woman, and two women. The women are scantily dressed while it is questionable if the men have any clothes on at all. Two of these models are used a couple of times to represent bis*xuals. If it could get any worse the text written is "SHARE THE LOVE."
Source: Huffingtonpost.com

i mean really American families Association, if you really think these Armani Exchange ads are the most distasteful smut your darling children are exposed to these days than you need a reality check. Love is love and as the years progress your opinion is going to be superfluous .. And really, if you think these ads are bad, i would hate for you to have to find out what 'poison' little johnny has been seeing without safesearch on that ipod touch you bought him for christmas. great job!

How about we focus on equality and open communication between families instead of trying to censor anything you don't happen to see moral.

Safeco Insurance donates $3.5 million in art

The Seattle-based insurance company is donating 840 pieces, worth about $3.5 million, to the Washington Art Consortium. (The Whatcom Museum and Western's Gallery will benefit from this donation too!) Today is a great day in the Northwest art world, especially knowing that hundreds of pieces by local artists will remain in the state.

This Is Qatar

MAGNIFIQUE

Rarely. RARELY do i admire a group so much as i admire Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros. One sure sign of love is when i cant tell if the man in the video is the groups frontman OR if he is the leader of a murderous cult ----> see Charles Manson..

RECRUIT ME!..do what you will Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros...as long as your blend of music, film, and cult imagery is never missed. If you have the time, watch the first two vids ( however, if they're not your thing...watch the third video, it's lovely, it's modern love)

Midlake at the Nighlight

Midlake will be playing at the Nightlight Lounge in Bellingham on March 7th at 8pm. This pleasant indie band from Denton, Texas gets a lot of play on Seattle's KEXP. If you're looking for a change from your normal booze filled nights of the rogue or whatever goes on at the royal, i'd suggest stopping by to check them out.

listen to: Midlake - Young Bride

(annd if you're into it, 3 inches of blood is also playing at the Nightlight in Bellingham on February 20th... i mean, their new album is called "Here Waits Thy Doom"... how metal is that)
