4AD Sessions - Efterklang
"The 4AD Sessions are an ongoing series of video recordings with various acts from the label's roster. Following on from the Deerhunter session at the Studio Plateaux on Platts Eyott island in 2008, the recordings will see 4AD artists performing back-catalogue covers and alternative versions of their own material." 4AD

Sufjan Stevens, 'The Age of Adz'
"So the good news is that Stevens is back. The bad news, for fans who only want to hear more of the same, is that his new EP and album show that he has little interest in rehashing his old sound. On The Age of Adz, Stevens replaces delicately plucked banjo lines, wispy vocals and sentimental melodies with glitchy soundscapes, hip-hop beats and heavily filtered vocals. As an added touch, he soaks the whole thing with a warm, deep wash of reverb. It's a bold move, and it pays off incredibly.
The Age of Adz opens with "Futile Devices" (is that a nod to his trademark sound up to now?), a relatively spare track that would fit alongside much of Stevens' earlier work. But the album takes a whiplash turn on the second cut with "Too Much," a regret-filled love letter layered with so many swirling electronics and drum machines, it sounds more like something from an Animal Collective record. The nine tracks that follow are equally and magnificently orchestrated, showing an inspired artist deconstructing his sound and rebuilding it with grace and flair. And while the mix is unexpected, Stevens retains his gift for crafting songs that are both epic and intimate. The Age of Adz may be a challenge for some longtime fans, but it's also more mysterious and less precious than anything Stevens has made up to now. Stevens has always pushed beyond the staid conventions of pop and rock music, and even if he's given up the "states" project, it's refreshing to see that he still loves the art of sonic adventure."

Jeff Soto (via johnathanlevinegallery.com) i love you, i love you, i love you.

"NEW YORK, NY (June 1, 2010) — Jonathan LeVine Gallery is pleased to present Lifecycle, an exhibition of new works by California based artist Jeff Soto, in what will be his third solo show at the gallery. In conjunction with this exhibition, the artist will be painting a site-specific public mural in New York City, and releasing a new limited-edition print.
Soto conveys narrative subject matter with dramatic lighting and textural richness in detailed and dynamic compositions. His work often communicates themes of nostalgia, fear, hope, and environmental issues. On the subject of his new series of paintings, however, the artist says:
“My work has always indirectly told bits and pieces of my own story, my thoughts and past. This new body of work is still autobiographical without being self-portraiture, but whereas previous exhibitions focused on current events, environmentalism, politics, and war, this show deals with themes that are more personal, emotional and timeless.”
As the show title suggests, works in Lifecycle refer to birth, death, and the voyage in between. The artist’s interest in time, mortality, fatherhood and generational relationships—within his own family and humankind in general—are explored through visual metaphors and symbolism.
Soto’s work exudes tension as his signature iconographic imagery continues to evolve. With background environments full of old machinery and industrial decay, Soto’s creatures inhabit desolate, forgotten spaces. The artist creates ominous worlds where quasi-divine apparitions with organic tendrils writhe from the cavities of smoking, robotic shells, as their lumbering frames preside over sprawling urban landscapes. Figures duel, wild flowers bloom and rainbows thrive, as dark smog and storm clouds loom amidst floating skulls."

in the morning and amazing.
well, seattle has finally decided to limp sullenly into summer, producing lazy sun in the afternoons and slight chances of warmth in the morning. dear city, i love you but we must cope by hiding in bed for that extra morning hour, guzzle coffee at unhealthy levels and of course concede to music that has become quiet, reserved. it's all your fault city, death by vitamin d deficiency. but again, amazing...oh, and more world cup please!

"There are exactly five plantonic solids; Tetrahedron, Cube, Octahedron, Dodecahedron, Icosahedron. While they might sound fancy they are actually the most basic building blocks that can be reduced to. They are named for the ancient Greek philosopher Plato who theorized that the classical elements were constructed from the regular solids. Algorithmic scripting is allowing designers to create new forms for the 21st era using Plato’s solids."

color me galaxy
Guide Description:
Vogons are one of the most unpleasant races in the galaxy. Not actually evil, but bad-tempered, bureaucratic, officious and callous. They wouldn't even lift a finger to save their own grandmothers from the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal without orders signed in triplicate, sent in, sent back, queried, lost, found, subjected to public inquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighters. The best way to get a drink out of a Vogon is to stick your finger down his throat, and the best way to irritate him is to feed his grandmother to the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal. On no account should you allow a Vogon to read poetry at you.

WO'POP
KEXPs WO'POP
Hands down one of the best parts about living in Seattle is listening to 90.3 KEXP on the radio. Mornings crossing the 520 bridge are made more than bearable solely because this station plays MUSIC! What an idea, eh? "Listener powered" KEXP is essential to my exploration of the world of music both in the Northwest and around the world. A few weeks ago on my commute home I made the personal discovery of Darek Mazzone's show WO'POP on Tuesdays from 3pm-6pm. Playing sounds from Puerto Rico to Bombay, Cairo to Mumbai, this man knows everything so ill let his words speak for themselves:
"Wo-Pop is a 3 hour look into what used to be called “World Music” I call it “Modern Global Music” because it encompasses all the current musical genres while being deeply engaged in the sounds and ideas of each city or region.
You will find Brazilian D&B, French and Cuban Hip Hop, South African Kwaito, Bhangra and Bollywood from Bombay and London, Malabax from Senegal, Ragga Dub from Brixton and Tokyo, and anything else that producers create from the 6 corners of the world.
I have the great pleasure of interviewing these artists and playing their tracks before they go public. It’s a great show that always surprises and hopefully inspires you to collect stamps. (passport stamps that is)
-Darek Mazzone"
Test it baby, it's brilliant! (oh and if you haven’t wandered around KEXPs website yet, I highly suggest that you do…it's easy to use and quite, quite credible)

[BUMP WORTHY]
Website of the week has to be BumpWorthy.com. Like im sure many of you have, so many nights I lay awake, insomnia ridden watching Adult Swim. (the only network worth watching past midnight).. and as brilliant as the beats may be, there is nothing more annoying than the barely legible typeface they use as their commercial text. ANYWAY, the Website provides clips of the bumps, artists, track titles, and options to download. At just a few seconds a piece, this website features almost 2000 different bumps. great.

HOLY WATCHES BATMAN!
Oh Bernie. Bernie, Bernie, Bernie.
As it turns out, Mr. Bernie Madoff spent more than a few of "his" bones on a number beautiful, beautiful time pieces during his years of billionaire privilege. Last November, after the ponzi schemester was finally brought to justice, his collection of more than 40 watches, including 17 Rolexes and several Audemars Piguets, Franck Mullers and Jaeger-LeCoultres, were be auctioned off. I don’t know how much they went for, but these watches are what my time-piece dreams are made of… a functional accessory is worth every penny.
